A preventable tragedy has struck again in NYC as a DoorDash deliveryman traveling on an e-bike was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. This sad news is all the more heartbreaking as the deliveryman was a hard-working immigrant from Senegal and a married father of four daughters.

On September 25, 2021, Babacar Dia, age 44, was riding an e-bike in East New York, Brooklyn, when a dark-colored sedan slammed into Dia and fled the scene. Dia was taken to Brookdale University Hospital but unfortunately he did not survive. Dia lived in the Bronx with his family but worked in Brooklyn so he could get more work doing deliveries. He immigrated to the United States from Senegal 23 years ago, dreaming of a better life for his family, and he recently received his documentation as a U.S. resident. Dia also sent money back to his family in Senegal.

Dia is one of many pedestrians and delivery workers recently struck and killed on the streets of NYC.  The pandemic has created a surge in the demand for food delivery services like DoorDash, Uber Eats, and Grubhub.  At least ten food delivery couriers have died in New York City this year.  In fact, in a recent survey, 49% of food delivery couriers reported having been in an accident or crash while making a delivery.  NYC government has grappled with passing legislation to protect food delivery drivers.
